Safia Fazlul was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and lived there shortly before she moved to Oslo, Norway. She grew up preoccupied with reading books and knew as soon as she learned how to write that she wanted to be an author when she grew up. She came to Canada when she was ten years old and found herself curious about the extremely different gender ideologies that she experienced at home and outside in the Canadian world. While at the University of Toronto, she tried to satisfy her curiosity by majoring in history and sociology, focusing on feminist views especially. Her interest in feminism and her love for writing pushed her to complete The Harem, her first novel. She currently lives in Toronto where she’s working on her second book.
